Adrian Mutu (born 8 January 1979) is a Romanian former professional footballer who played principally as a forward. Renowned for his technical skill, quick movement and eye for goal, he spent much of his career in Italy and England and was a long-time member of the Romania national team.
Club career
Mutu began his career in Romania before moving to Italy, where he had spells with several clubs and established himself in Serie A. His performances in Italy earned him a transfer to the English Premier League, where he joined Chelsea. After an interruption to his time in England, he returned to Italy and enjoyed a productive period with Fiorentina, regaining form and goal-scoring consistency.
International career
Across the 2000s Mutu was a regular selection for Romania, appearing at major international tournaments and contributing important goals in qualification and friendlies. He was regarded as one of Romania's most talented forwards of his generation and often carried attacking responsibility for the national side.
Controversy and sanctions
Mutu's playing career was affected by an off-field incident while he was with Chelsea: he tested positive for a recreational drug, which led to his dismissal from the club and a subsequent suspension by the sport's authorities. The episode prompted legal and disciplinary proceedings that were widely reported and had a lasting impact on his reputation and finances.
Style, legacy and later activity
On the field Mutu combined flair and opportunism, able to operate both as a central striker and a supporting forward. After his peak playing years he remained a well-known figure in Romanian football and has been involved in the sport in various capacities. His career is often discussed for the contrast between his clear talent and the setbacks that interrupted his progress.
