History and development

The villages that form Zemst have medieval roots and developed as small agrarian settlements. Like many Belgian municipalities, Zemst took its current administrative shape after the countrywide municipal reorganization of the 1970s. Over time the area shifted from primarily agricultural activity toward a more mixed economy as commuting to Brussels and nearby cities increased.

Transport, economy and local life

Residents benefit from regional transport links that provide access to Brussels, Mechelen and other nearby towns; road and rail connections make Zemst a convenient location for commuters. The local economy combines small enterprises, services and farming. Community life features parish churches, village centres, walking and cycling routes, and periodic local events that reflect the individual character of the component villages.
