Zdravko Tomac (1937–2020)

Political alignment and career

For much of his early career Tomac was a member of the League of Communists, the ruling political organization in Yugoslavia. With the political changes of the early 1990s and the breakup of Yugoslavia, he joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the main post‑communist and centre‑left formation in Croatia. He is often identified with the post‑communist left and was a frequent participant in public debates about the country’s direction after socialism.

Tomac served as a member of the Croatian Parliament (MP) from 1995 until 2005. During that decade he took part in legislative work and represented the SDP in parliamentary discussions and public forums. In 2003 he formally left the SDP, continuing thereafter as a public figure and commentator rather than as a mainstream party official.

Public image and significance

Throughout his public life Tomac was a polarizing but prominent personality: praised by some for steady advocacy of social‑democratic positions and criticized by others for his communist past.
