Archaeological and historical evidence show Bethlehem has ancient origins and has been inhabited through successive periods: ancient, Roman and Byzantine Christian eras, Crusader and Ottoman rule, and the modern mandates and administrations of the 20th century. The site acquired special prominence in late antiquity because of its association with the nativity tradition.
