Geography and environment

The unit stretches from the low-lying coastal plains and lagoons along the Aegean Sea into forested foothills and the Rhodope mountains to the north. History and development

The coexistence of communities contributes to bilingual signage, religious diversity and varied traditions, especially visible in festivals and markets.

The regional unit is divided into several municipalities, including the municipality centered on Xanthi and coastal/nearby towns such as Abdera. Agriculture (formerly including tobacco), small industry, services and seasonal tourism form the economic base.
