Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann is a mountain municipality created on 1 January 2010 by the merger of the former communes of Wildhaus and Alt St. Johann. Located in the historical region of Toggenburg, it lies within the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The municipality groups several villages, alpine pastures and wooded slopes under a single local administration (municipality), and it is predominantly German-speaking.

Geography and landscape

The area occupies a high valley and surrounding uplands typical of the northeastern Swiss Alps. Rolling alpine meadows, steep forested ridges and rocky summits provide views toward the Churfirsten and Alpstein ranges. Land use combines permanent settlements at lower elevations with seasonal alpine grazing and mountain pasture huts. A network of marked trails and minor roads links hamlets, pastures and recreation areas.

History and cultural significance

The constituent villages have medieval roots as agrarian and pastoral communities within Toggenburg. Wildhaus is known as the birthplace of the Protestant reformer Huldrych Zwingli; the local heritage is interpreted in small museums and commemorative sites. Traditional architecture, chapels and village festivals reflect religious and rural customs that persist alongside modern tourism.

Economy and recreation

Tourism is a major economic pillar. Winters offer family-oriented skiing, cross-country tracks and snowshoe routes; summers attract hikers, mountain bikers and paragliders. Agriculture, notably dairy and alpine farming, remains important. Local businesses provide accommodation, restaurants and mountain guides.

  • Winter sports: gentle slopes, lifts and groomed trails
  • Summer activities: extensive hiking paths, alpine huts and viewpoints
  • Cultural visits: local history exhibits and seasonal festivals

Administration, access and services

The municipal council manages schools, local infrastructure and services within the cantonal framework of St. Gallen. Access is by regional roads and public transport connections from surrounding towns and the wider Swiss rail network; visitors commonly reach the area via regional transit hubs. Practical visitor information and administrative contacts are available from the municipal office and regional tourist information (municipality, Toggenburg, St. Gallen).

Nature, conservation and local life

Alpine habitats support diverse flora and fauna; seasonal management balances grazing, forestry and recreation. Local cultural life blends long-standing rural traditions with events aimed at visitors.
