Each number in a Whyte description counts wheels (not axles). For example, a 4-6-2 has four leading wheels (two axles), six driving wheels (three axles) and two trailing wheels (one axle). A suffix such as "T" is commonly appended to indicate a tank locomotive (e.g., 0-6-0T). For locomotives built as articulated units the groups are separated by a plus sign (for example, 2-6-0+0-6-2), showing the wheel sets of each engine frame.
