Wharton County, Texas

Geography and environment

The county lies within the Gulf Coastal Plains region and features flat to gently rolling terrain, fertile soils, and a network of streams and rivers that support agriculture. Much of the land is devoted to crop production, pasture and ranchland, with scattered woodlands and wetlands in low-lying areas. Its location places it within driving distance of larger metropolitan centers in southeastern Texas.

History and name

Wharton County developed during the 19th century as settlement and cotton cultivation expanded across Texas. The county is named for William H. Wharton, an early Texas statesman and leader in the era of the Republic of Texas. Over time the area diversified its economy and transportation links, while retaining an agricultural character.

Agriculture remains a principal economic activity, with crops, livestock and related services important to local employment. Small manufacturing, trade, education and local government also contribute to the economy. Notable communities include the county seat, Wharton, and other incorporated towns and unincorporated settlements that serve as local centers for commerce and services.
