History and development
The county was organized in the early 19th century and was named for a figure associated with the American Revolutionary era. Settlement and early industry were shaped by timber, agriculture, and water-powered mills. The arrival of railroads and later improved roads helped the county develop as both a local commercial center and a destination for visitors escaping city heat.
Economy and recreation
Tourism is a major economic driver. Lake George, hiking, skiing, boating and summer resorts draw seasonal visitors and support hotels, restaurants, and outdoor outfitters. Beyond tourism, the county's economy includes healthcare, education, light manufacturing and professional services centered around Glens Falls and Queensbury.
