History and significance

Villers-Cotterêts is best known for the Ordinance of 1539, commonly called the Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts, issued by King Francis I. That decree required that many official and legal acts be written in French rather than Latin and led to the systematic keeping of parish registers, measures that helped shape modern French administration and record-keeping. Centuries later the town gained literary fame as the birthplace of the novelist Alexandre Dumas (born 1802); his family and legacy are commemorated in local institutions.
