Sten Bengt Gustaf Gustafsson (2 December 1933 – 15 March 2019) was a senior officer in the Swedish Army who served as Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces from 1986 until 1994. As Supreme Commander he was the highest-ranking military professional in Sweden and the principal military adviser to civilian government authorities during a period of major international change.
Military career and responsibilities
Gustafsson rose through the ranks of the Swedish Army to become a four-star general and head of the combined service headquarters. In this role he was responsible for the operational readiness of Sweden's land, air and naval forces, for advising on defence policy, and for implementing decisions made by the Government and Riksdag (parliament).
