Victor Shem-Tov — Bulgarian-born Israeli political leader and health minister

Early life and immigration

Shem-Tov was born in Samokov, Bulgaria, and spent much of his youth in the capital, Sofia. He grew up within the Bulgarian Jewish community and became active in Zionist youth movements. At age 24, he made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1939 and shortly thereafter joined the socialist‑Zionist youth group Hashomer Hatzair, committing himself to labor and communal ideals.
