Overview

Vicques was a small, predominantly French-speaking municipality situated in the district of Delémont in the Swiss canton of Jura, in Switzerland. It functioned as a local administrative unit with typical services for rural communities: a municipal council, local schools, and community facilities that served surrounding villages and hamlets.

Geography and administration

Set within the rolling plateaus and wooded slopes characteristic of Jura canton, Vicques occupied a landscape of mixed farmland, pasture and small forests. Like many Jura localities it benefitted from proximity to larger towns in the Delémont area while retaining a village scale and identity. Administrative responsibilities covered local planning, basic infrastructure and cultural programming.

History and development

The settlement history of Vicques follows the broader regional pattern: rural origins with gradual modernization through the 19th and 20th centuries. Over time the village adapted to economic changes by combining traditional agriculture with small-scale industry and services. Local heritage is reflected in village architecture and communal institutions rather than in a single dominant landmark.

Economy and culture

The local economy traditionally relied on agriculture and artisanal trades, supplemented by commuting to jobs in nearby towns. Cultural life centered on communal events, local associations and schooling, which helped preserve the linguistic and social character of the community. Outdoor recreation and nature appreciation are typical attractions in the Jura area.

Merger and legacy

On 1 January 2013 Vicques merged with the neighbouring municipalities of Montsevelier and Vermes to form the new municipality of Val Terbi. The consolidation aimed to streamline administration, pool public services and strengthen local governance while retaining local identity through village-level traditions and representation within the larger municipal structure.
