Vicente Sota Barros (28 April 1924 – 16 August 2017) was a Chilean politician and long-serving member of the national legislature. Born in Talca, he took part in public life across decades marked by political change in Chile. Sota belonged to the Christian Democratic Party (Partido Demócrata Cristiano) for much of his early career and joined the Party for Democracy (Partido por la Democracia, PPD) in 1987, remaining associated with the latter party until his death.
Early life and political alignment
Sota was born in the central Chilean city of Talca. Details of his early private life and non-parliamentary career are less widely reported; publicly he is best known for his legislative roles and party affiliations. His move from the Christian Democratic Party to the Party for Democracy in 1987 reflected broader realignments among centrist and centre-left politicians during the final years of the military dictatorship and the return to democratic government.
Legislative career and leadership roles
Sota served in senior positions within the Chamber of Deputies of Chile. He was Deputy President (vice president) of the chamber from 1965 to 1969 and again after the restoration of democratic institutions from 1990 to 1998. During the mid-1990s he held the post of President of the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 1995. These leadership roles placed him in the presiding team responsible for guiding legislative business, overseeing debates, and representing the chamber in official functions.
Context and significance
His second period of leadership, beginning in 1990, coincided with Chile's transition back to civilian rule following the end of Augusto Pinochet's regime. While not the most prominent national figure of that era, Sota's continuity in parliamentary leadership through the 1990s contributed to institutional stability as the country implemented democratic reforms and reinvigorated its congressional processes.
