Vibeke Skofterud — Norwegian cross-country skier and Olympic relay champion

Career highlights

Skofterud was a regular member of the Norwegian national team through the 2000s and into the early 2010s. Her most prominent achievement was winning Olympic gold in the 4 × 5 km relay at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics as part of Norway's women’s team. Her best individual finish at the Olympic Games came earlier, when she placed eighth in the 30 km race at Salt Lake City in 2002. Death and legacy

Skofterud died on 29 July 2018 in a recreational accident while jet skiing near Arendal. Reports describe the incident as a jet-skiing accident that proved fatal. Her death prompted tributes from teammates, sports organizations and fans, and brought renewed attention to both her sporting achievements and the personal struggles she had spoken about publicly.

She is remembered for her contribution to Norway’s relay success, for being an outspoken personality in Norwegian sport, and for the discussions her life and passing stimulated about athlete welfare and inclusion.
