Vibeke Westbye Skofterud (20 April 1980 – 29 July 2018) was a Norwegian cross-country skier who competed internationally for Norway. Born in Askim, Norway, she was best known for her role on Norway's relay teams and for representing her country at several Winter Olympic Games and on the World Cup circuit.

Career highlights

Skofterud was a regular member of the Norwegian national team through the 2000s and into the early 2010s. Her most prominent achievement was winning Olympic gold in the 4 × 5 km relay at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics as part of Norway's women’s team. Her best individual finish at the Olympic Games came earlier, when she placed eighth in the 30 km race at Salt Lake City in 2002. Beyond the Olympics, she competed in World Cup events and national championships, contributing to Norway’s depth in both distance and team events.

Off the snow, Skofterud was publicly open about aspects of her life that intersected with wider social issues. Death and legacy

Skofterud died on 29 July 2018 in a recreational accident while jet skiing near Arendal. Reports describe the incident as a jet-skiing accident that proved fatal. She is remembered for her contribution to Norway’s relay success, for being an outspoken personality in Norwegian sport, and for the discussions her life and passing stimulated about athlete welfare and inclusion.
