Location and administration

Administratively Uster serves as the seat of the district: district capital. The district itself contains several neighbouring municipalities and is commonly referred to in regional planning documents: district of Uster. Uster belongs to the canton of Zürich, the most populous canton in the country: canton of Zürich, and of course is part of Switzerland.

Geography and transport

Located close to the small but scenic Greifensee, Uster benefits from lakeside landscapes and nearby agricultural land. The town is integrated into the Zürich transport network, with regular rail and road connections that make it a common home for commuters working in larger urban centres. Public transport, local roads and cycle routes provide links to the surrounding municipalities and natural areas.

History, heritage and recognition

Uster has a layered history visible in its built environment, from older civic and religious structures to 19th–20th century housing and industrial sites. In recognition of efforts to preserve and harmonize its townscape, the municipality received the Wakker Prize in 2001: Wakker Prize 2001, an award presented by a national heritage organization for quality in planning and conservation.
