United States women's national soccer team

The United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) is the world's most successful national team in women's football. They have been world champions four times, Olympic champions four times and CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup winners seven times. Along with Germany and Norway, the USA is the only country to have won the Olympics, the World Cup and the continental championships. The US girls were also the first team to be made up entirely of professional women footballers.

In March 2004, two of her great idols, Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm, were chosen by Brazilian "footballer of the century" Pelé as the only women on the FIFA 100 list, which - contrary to what the name suggests - lists the 125 best footballers still alive at the time. Both players selected are no longer active. Thirty-seven players on the US team have played at least 100 international matches, while eleven have played at least 200 (only two Chinese players, Gemma Fay, Birgit Prinz, Patrizia Panico, Katrine Pedersen, Therese Sjögran and Caroline Seger from Europe, Canadians Christine Sinclair and Diana Matheson and Japan's Homare Sawa have also played at least 200 matches). With Kristine Lilly and Christie Pearce and Carli Lloyd no longer active, the USA are the only players with at least 300 caps.

The U.S. has played the most international matches of any women's national team with 683, 78.6% of which have been won. The USA vs. Canada matches are the most common international matchups in women's soccer with 62, and there have been the most intercontinental matchups against China (58).

Team USA was ranked No. 1 in the FIFA World Rankings from March 2008 until December 2014, when it was overtaken by Germany, but took back the No. 1 spot by winning the 2015 World Cup. After finishing only fourth in the 2017 SheBelieves Cup, the team lost the No. 1 spot again to the German team in March 2017, but regained it in June 2017.
