The knockout stage of the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament ran from 21 June to 1 July 2012. After the group phase, eight teams advanced — the top two finishers from each of the four groups — into a single-elimination bracket that produced the continental champion. The stage consisted of quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final.

Format and bracket

The eight qualified teams were drawn into a fixed bracket, with group winners paired against runners-up from other groups according to the tournament schedule. The knockout phase comprised:

  1. Quarter-finals (four matches)
  2. Semi-finals (two matches)
  3. Final (one match)

Match rules and tiebreakers

Each knockout match lasted 90 minutes of regular time. If teams were level at the end of normal time, the game proceeded to 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves). If the deadlock remained, the winner was decided by a penalty shoot-out. Standard competition regulations on substitutions, disciplinary measures and match officiating applied.

The knockout stage was staged at stadiums across both host nations. Although Poland (Poland) and the Ukraine (Ukraine) provided the venues and much of the organization, neither host nation reached the knockout phase — an uncommon outcome for co-hosts.

Beyond determining the champion, the knockout stage is the most decisive and high-pressure portion of the championship, often producing memorable matches due to the sudden-death nature of elimination, extra-time drama and penalty shoot-outs. It also shaped narratives about teams' tournament performance, tactical approaches and player legacies.
