Twenty-four national teams took part in UEFA Euro 2016, hosted in France. Each participating football association was required to register a squad of 23 players for the competition; that roster had to include three goalkeepers and be submitted to UEFA by 31 May 2016, which fell ten days before the tournament's opening match.

Squad composition

The final list submitted to UEFA served as the official tournament roster. Every delegation's entry was limited to 23 players, and the inclusion of three goalkeepers was mandatory to ensure teams had specialist coverage for that position.

Injury and illness replacements

If a player became injured or seriously ill before the team’s participation in the tournament, he could be withdrawn and replaced on the official list. Such changes required medical verification: the UEFA Medical Committee had to approve the withdrawal, and the player’s club medical staff were also involved in certifying the condition.

Regulatory framework

These requirements and procedures are contained in the competition regulations; specifically, the rules governing squad submission and permitted replacements are set out in Article 44 of the UEFA Euro 2016 regulations.
