Overview
Group A of UEFA Euro 2012 took place between 8 and 16 June 2012 during the tournament co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. Four national teams — Poland, Czech Republic, Greece and Russia — contested three matchdays in a round-robin format. The group produced two qualifiers for the quarter-finals and two nations that were eliminated after the group stage.
Teams and format
The group followed the standard European Championship group rules: each team played the other three once, earning three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Goal difference and head-to-head criteria decided ties in the standings. The participants were:
- Poland (co-host nation)
- Czech Republic
- Greece
- Russia
Results and progression
After three rounds of matches the Czech Republic finished atop the group and advanced to the quarter-finals alongside Greece. Poland, despite the advantage of being one of the host nations, and Russia failed to progress. The order of finish reflected consistent group performances rather than a single decisive match.
Notable aspects and legacy
Group A was notable for combining a host team with several experienced European sides. The outcome reinforced the unpredictability of short group stages: pre-tournament expectations do not always determine qualification. The performances of the advancing teams shaped their subsequent runs in the knockout phase and contributed to discussions about tactics and squad selection that followed the tournament.
