Overview
Tutong District is one of the four administrative districts of Brunei. Located in the central-western part of the country, it combines coastal settlements, lowland rivers and inland peat swamp forests. The district seat and principal town is Pekan Tutong, which functions as the local administrative and commercial centre.
Geography and natural features
The Tutong River is a major freshwater artery that crosses the district and has shaped settlement patterns and local livelihoods. Tutong contains the largest natural lake in Brunei, Tasek Merimbun, set within a protected area that preserves freshwater habitats, peat forest and a variety of birdlife. The district landscape transitions from mangroves and coastal wetlands to inland lowland rainforest and farmland.
Administration and communities
Tutong District comprises several subdistricts and rural villages governed under Brunei’s national administrative framework. The population is concentrated in Pekan Tutong and a number of kampong (village) settlements. Residents include Malay, indigenous groups and other communities, with a mix of Malay language varieties alongside local dialects and cultural traditions.
Economy and land use
The economy of Tutong is largely rural in character. Agriculture, fisheries and small-scale commerce provide livelihoods for many inhabitants, while public services and retail trade are centered in the district town. Roads link Tutong to the capital and neighbouring districts, enabling commuting and trade.
Conservation and visitor attractions
Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park is the district’s most prominent conservation and recreation area, notable for its lake, peat swamp vegetation and wildlife viewing opportunities. The Tutong River and coastal stretches also attract local visitors for fishing, boat travel and cultural experiences. Protected areas aim to balance biodiversity conservation with traditional land use.
