Club career

Cherry began his senior career with Huddersfield Town, where he established himself as a first-team defender. He later joined Leeds United, becoming part of a strong defensive unit and contributing regularly over several seasons. He finished his playing days at Bradford City, where his experience proved valuable to younger teammates and the local community.

International career

At international level, Cherry earned 27 caps for the England national team. He was regarded as a reliable option for the national side across a number of seasons. Notably, he was the third England international to be shown a red card, a rare occurrence at the time that drew attention but did not overshadow his overall contributions.

Management and the Valley Parade fire

After retiring as a player, Cherry became manager of Bradford City, serving from 1982 to 1987. During his tenure the club endured one of English football’s worst disasters: the fire at Valley Parade in May 1985. The tragedy claimed 56 lives and injured at least 265 people. As manager, Cherry played a part in the immediate response and the long recovery that followed, and the event marked a defining and traumatic moment for the club and the wider community.

Cherry was remembered as a sturdy and intelligent defender, capable of playing in different defensive positions and valued for his reading of the game.
