Career and major projects

Spurgeon is best known for two editorial platforms. He served a five-year tenure as editor of The Comics Journal, a leading magazine of comics criticism and news, where he oversaw interviews, criticism and features that explored both creative and industry issues. Later he founded and maintained the blog The Comics Reporter, which became a widely read daily chronicle of news, obituaries, reviews and historical notes about comics creators and publishing.

Work and approach

Across his writing and editing, Spurgeon combined historical knowledge with accessible reporting. He conducted long-form interviews with creators, covered festivals and conventions, and wrote obituaries and retrospectives that highlighted lesser-known figures as well as celebrated practitioners. His approach emphasized context — placing contemporary works and careers within broader developments in comics history and publishing.

Awards and recognition

  • Three-time recipient of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award, recognizing his contribution to comics journalism and criticism.
  • Respected by peers for elevating critical discussion and preserving the record of creators’ work.

Influence and legacy

Spurgeon’s writing helped raise standards for criticism in the field and encouraged readers and editors to treat comics seriously. His blog served as a daily repository for news and thoughtful commentary, and his editorial work helped promote long-form criticism and archival reporting. Many writers, editors, and researchers in comics cite his influence in shaping how the medium is chronicled and discussed.

Personal notes and death

Spurgeon remained an active presence in comics journalism until his passing. He died on November 13, 2019 in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 51. Tributes after his death emphasized his generosity to younger writers, his deep knowledge of comics history, and the lasting value of his reporting and editorial work.
