Playing career

Tausch's longest tenure was with the Minnesota Vikings, where he played from 1982 through 1988. He then joined the San Francisco 49ers for the 1989 season. Across those seasons he served primarily on the offensive line, contributing in both starting and rotational roles depending on team needs and game plans. His time in the league placed him among the many linemen whose work helped protect quarterbacks and open lanes for running backs.

Position, role and characteristics

As a guard, Tausch's responsibilities included blocking on run plays, creating interior room for ball carriers, and protecting the quarterback on passing downs. Guards require a blend of strength, leverage, and quickness to handle defensive tackles and stunting linebackers. Teammates and coaches typically valued players like Tausch for reliability and the ability to execute assignments in a coordinated offensive line unit.

Teams and context

  • Minnesota Vikings (1982–1988): The bulk of Tausch's career, contributing to the club's offensive front through most of the 1980s.
  • San Francisco 49ers (1989): He concluded his NFL playing career with San Francisco during a season when the 49ers were a leading franchise in the league.

Legacy and later life

Tausch is remembered as one of many professional linemen of his era who provided the foundational, often underappreciated work essential to NFL offenses. After leaving professional football he lived in Texas. He died on March 25, 2020 at his home in Plano, Texas, at the age of 61. His career remains part of the history of the teams he played for and of the NFL during a formative decade.
