Telephone numbers in Bangladesh

Structure and common formats

For calls from abroad, numbers are normally presented in international format beginning with +880 followed by the national significant number. When calling within Bangladesh, the leading international code is not used; instead a national trunk prefix is dialed. Mobile telephone numbers in Bangladesh are commonly written and dialed domestically starting with 01 (for example, 01X XXXXXX), while landline numbers include an area code such as 2 for Dhaka. Exact lengths and digit groupings differ between mobile and various geographic areas.

How to dial

• From outside Bangladesh: replace the domestic leading zero with +880 and then dial the remaining digits (for example, +880 1X XXXXXXX for a mobile number).
• From inside Bangladesh to a mobile or to another region: use the national trunk prefix (typically a leading zero) plus the full domestic number (for example, 01X XXXXXXX).
• To a Dhaka landline from abroad: use +880 2 ...; from inside the country use 02 ....

History and administration

The international code +880 was allocated through international telecommunication authorities as part of the global country code system. National numbering plans are managed by Bangladesh’s telecommunications regulator and operators, who allocate ranges for fixed lines, mobile carriers and special services. Over time, growth in mobile service prompted the assignment of multiple mobile blocks.
