The earliest Tamil inscriptions and poems date from the early centuries BCE and the classical Sangam corpus preserves early urban and courtly literature. Over centuries Tamil evolved through contact with Sanskrit, regional languages and foreign traders, producing medieval devotional movements, temple literature and later modern standardization in printing, education and journalism.

In modern times Tamil has official recognition in India (as a scheduled language and the principal language of Tamil Nadu), in Sri Lanka and as one of Singapore's official languages. It has been the subject of cultural revival movements and formal recognition of its classical status within India.

Tamil functions as a vehicle for religion (Hindu, Christian and Muslim traditions), classical and modern literature, cinema (Kollywood), music and performing arts.
