A stimulus is any event or agent that evokes a response. The term applies across biology, psychology, neuroscience, economics and engineering to denote inputs that produce measurable reactions.

A stimulus is any change in the internal or external environment that elicits a reaction from a living organism, device, or system. In biology and psychology the concept emphasizes sensory or neural inputs that lead to physiological or behavioral responses. In other fields the word is used more broadly to describe any trigger that produces an observable effect, such as a policy action that influences an economy.

Stimuli vary in modality, intensity and duration. They may be physical (light, sound, pressure), chemical (odours, neurotransmitters), biological (pathogens, pheromones) or abstract (financial incentives, messages). The plural form, stimuli, is commonly used in scientific descriptions.

Types and examples

  • Sensory stimuli: inputs perceived by sensory organs, e.g., visual, auditory and tactile signals.
  • Sign stimuli: simple cues that trigger fixed action patterns in animals, such as a color pattern that provokes parental care.
  • Internal stimuli: physiological signals like hunger, thirst or hormone fluctuations.
  • Systemic stimuli: non-biological triggers such as fiscal stimulus measures or control signals in engineering systems.

Key properties that determine how a stimulus is handled include its magnitude relative to a detection threshold, its rate of change, and the context of prior exposure. Repeated or prolonged exposure can lead to adaptation (reduced sensory sensitivity) or habituation (diminished behavioral response).

In neuroscience, stimuli are transduced into electrical signals by receptors and processed by neural circuits; latency, amplitude and integration of inputs shape the ultimate response. In psychology, experimental paradigms control stimulus features to study perception, attention and learning. In economics, a "stimulus" often denotes deliberate policy actions intended to alter aggregate demand or activity.

Understanding stimuli and their properties is central to disciplines concerned with input–output relationships. Distinguishing a stimulus from the response it provokes, and from background noise or signals, is fundamental for experimental design, diagnostics, and practical interventions across science and engineering.
