Ribeira Grande is a municipality on the island of Santo Antão in the Cape Verde archipelago. Its municipal seat and principal town is Ponta do Sol, a coastal settlement that serves as the administrative and service centre for the area. The municipality is shaped by a network of deep ribeiras (river valleys), steep slopes and a short rugged coastline; these physical features have determined settlement patterns, land use and transport on the northern side of the island.
Geography and subdivisions
The municipality contains a mix of coastal and interior terrain. Valleys channel moisture and allow for intensive small-scale farming on terraced slopes and valley floors. Administratively, Ribeira Grande is divided into four civil parishes (freguesias), which group the urban core around Ponta do Sol with the surrounding rural communities and mountain villages. Parishes provide a local layer of administration and community identity.
History and settlement
Settlement on Santo Antão dates to the early period of Portuguese colonisation and developed around watercourses and fertile valley land. Over centuries inhabitants built terraces and irrigation systems to maximise arable land on otherwise steep terrain. Ponta do Sol developed as a local port and trading hub, linking valley villages to the coast and to other islands.
Economy, agriculture and tourism
Local livelihoods are mixed: smallholder agriculture remains important, with terraces used for fruits, vegetables and other crops suited to the microclimates of the valleys. Small-scale fishing and local commerce support coastal communities. In recent decades tourism—particularly hiking and nature-based visits—has grown, with trails that traverse valleys, ridges and traditional villages attracting visitors seeking scenery and cultural encounters.
Transport, services and conservation
Roads follow the coastline and penetrate some valleys, but many settlements remain connected by footpaths and mule tracks. Public services are concentrated in Ponta do Sol, while smaller settlements rely on municipal and parish facilities. Conservation of soil, water and terraces is important to reduce erosion on steep slopes and to maintain agricultural productivity and scenic values that support tourism.
