Rancid (band)
The title of this article is ambiguous. For other meanings, see Rancid (disambiguation).
Rancid is a punk band with ska influences from Berkeley, California. Rancid are considered one of the most influential bands of the 1990s punk revival. Their most successful and best-known album to date is ... And Out Come the Wolves, which is very much influenced by The Clash and The Specials, as well as various ska influences.
History
The band was formed in 1991 by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, two former members of the band Operation Ivy, and completed by Lars Frederiksen and Brett Reed. Rancid went on hiatus in 2005 due to Matt Freeman's supposed illness with lung cancer. However, the disease turned out to be a benign tissue change. In 2006, the band was featured with a track on the soundtrack of director Rob Rotten's gonzo film Fuck the System. The band made a guest appearance on the track Coppers (Brooklyn version) on Dr. Israel's album Inna City Pressure. Furthermore, Rancid was also featured in the television series South Park, where they briefly performed the track Brad Logan (from the single of the same name).
Rancid's website announced the release of a new album in the spring of 2007, but it was more than two years in coming due to the change in drums. The new album Let The Dominoes Fall was released in June 2009, featuring the new drummer Branden Steineckert for the first time. It was produced again by Brett Gurewitz. It was followed by the release of the album Honor Is All We Know in October 2014. In May 2017, Rancid announced the album Trouble Maker for June of the same year. A few hours after the announcement, the single Ghost of a Chance was released.
Some of the band members are also active in other bands. For example, Lars Frederiksen is also a member of the groups Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards and The Old Firm Casuals. Tim played in Operation Ivy (together with Matt Freeman) and the Transplants (together with Travis Barker), he also runs the label Hellcat Records. New drummer Branden Steineckert was formerly active with The Used. Bassist Matt Freemann also plays and sings in the band Devil's Brigade, which is much closer to psychobilly.
