Geography and communities

Located along bays and inlets of the Atlantic coast, Babylon includes barrier island frontage and inland neighborhoods. It contains a mix of incorporated villages and unincorporated hamlets. Examples of places within the town include:

• Village of Babylon — a downtown and ferry/boating gateway for the area.
• Lindenhurst, Amityville, and Brightwaters — incorporated villages with distinct centers.
• Hamlets such as Copiague, West Babylon and Deer Park that provide much of the town’s residential fabric.

History

Before European settlement the area was inhabited by Algonquian-speaking Indigenous peoples. Over time Long Island’s southern shore developed as fishing, shipbuilding and farming communities. The town evolved through the 19th and 20th centuries as transportation links improved and suburban development increased, transforming it from a collection of waterfront villages into a more densely settled suburban town.

Babylon’s economy blends local retail, service businesses, marine-related activity and commuter income from residents who work elsewhere in Long Island or New York City. Rail and road connections play a major role: a Long Island Rail Road branch terminates at the Village of Babylon and regional parkways and highways provide automobile access across Long Island.
