Overview
Nonières was a small rural commune located in the Ardèche department, in the broader area of southern France. The locality retained the typical character of many southern French villages: a compact settlement surrounded by agricultural land and woodland, with local lanes connecting it to neighboring hamlets and towns. On 1 January 2019 Nonières ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it was merged into the new commune of Belsentes.
Geography and character
Nonières lay within the administrative limits of the département of Ardèche, a region known for varied terrain including plateaus, river valleys and forested hills. The landscape around such villages commonly features stone-built houses, small-scale farms, orchards and pastures, and is typical of the rural Vivarais and surrounding areas. Vegetation often includes mixed deciduous woodland, chestnut groves and scrub adapted to a Mediterranean-influenced climate.
Administrative history
The status of communes in France dates from the Revolutionary period and represents the lowest tier of local government. In recent decades the national government has encouraged voluntary mergers to form "communes nouvelles" with the aim of improving municipal services and administrative efficiency. Nonières was merged into Belsentes on 1 January 2019 as part of this broader trend in local administration.
Local life and economy
Like many small Ardèche settlements, Nonières' economy historically relied on agriculture, livestock and small trades. Contemporary life in such villages often blends traditional farming with rural tourism, artisan activity and residents who commute to larger towns. Local cultural life typically revolves around communal events, seasonal markets and religious or civic celebrations.
