The New Zealand Warriors are a professional rugby league club based in Auckland. Founded in 1995, the team represents New Zealand in the Australian competition and currently competes in the National Rugby League (NRL). The Warriors are the only club in the NRL headquartered outside Australia and, as of 2026, have not won an NRL premiership.
History
Established during the mid-1990s expansion of the sport, the club entered the top-level competition in 1995. Over the following decades the Warriors became the focal point for professional rugby league in New Zealand, developing local talent and building a national fanbase. The side reached the NRL Grand Final on two occasions (2002 and 2011) but were defeated on both attempts.
Home ground and support
The Warriors play their home matches in Auckland, where supporters from across New Zealand travel to watch the team. Their traditional venue is Mount Smart Stadium, which hosts home fixtures and community events tied to the club. The franchise maintains one of the largest followings of any NRL club outside Australia, drawing strong crowds and media attention for away fixtures played in New Zealand.
Club identity
- Colours and badge: The team's playing kit and logo have evolved, but the club is widely identified by a bold visual identity intended to represent New Zealand sport on the regional stage.
- Development: The Warriors operate youth and development programs to bring through New Zealand players into professional ranks and the NRL squad.
Performance and honours
While the Warriors have produced memorable seasons and notable finals appearances, they have yet to capture an NRL premiership. They have, however, been influential in promoting rugby league in New Zealand and producing players who have competed at international level.
Notable players and personnel
- The club has featured a number of prominent players who have represented New Zealand and other nations at Test level.
- Coaching and administrative leadership has varied over time; these changes have shaped periods of strong performance and rebuilding alike.
Role in the game
As the primary professional rugby league franchise in New Zealand, the Warriors play a central role in the sport’s profile across the country. They act as a pathway for local players to reach the NRL and international competitions and serve as a bridge between New Zealand rugby league communities and the Australian-based competition.
