Life and career

Born and raised in Santiago, Echeverría worked across several fields of cultural life. She wrote newspaper and magazine pieces, taught students, appeared on stage and published books that addressed Chile's social movements and personalities. Her public persona combined intellectual rigour with a plainspoken, combative voice that appealed to readers who sought alternatives to mainstream narratives.

Major works and methods

Her first major book, Antihistoria de un luchador (1993), is a lengthy biographical study of the labor leader Clotario Blest. According to accounts, the book took many years to complete and reflects Echeverría's patient research and interest in the lives of social activists. Late in life she continued to publish; in 2016 she released ¡Háganme callar!, a book that gathered essays and commentary reflecting her opposition to contemporary policies and the neoliberal economic model that reshaped Chile in the late 20th century (neoliberal policies).
