Overview
The Mil Mi-24, known in NATO reporting as the "Hind," is a large, twin-engined helicopter designed to perform both attack and limited transport roles. Conceived by the Mil design bureau, it was one of the first production rotorcraft intended to combine gunship firepower with the ability to carry a small squad of troops directly into combat. That hybrid concept set the Mi-24 apart from many contemporaries that were built solely as either gunships or transports.

Design and characteristics
The Mi-24's layout includes a heavily built fuselage with armored cockpit and critical systems to improve survivability on the battlefield. It typically carries a crew of two or three (pilot, co-pilot/gunner and sometimes a flight engineer) and can accommodate a short-range infantry load in a cabin behind the cockpit. The airframe is fitted with fixed weapon stations and hardpoints for external stores.

Operators valued its combination of firepower and the ability to deliver troops, earning it informal descriptions such as a "flying infantry fighting vehicle." The type has also drawn critique: its size and speed make it a prominent target and its multi-role compromise has been debated by tacticians. Despite that, continual upgrades and redesigns have kept the basic airframe in service for decades.
