Overview

Michael Jenkins Crouch (27 May 1933 – 9 February 2018) was an Australian businessman best known as the founder and long-time leader of Zip Industries, a manufacturing firm specialising in water heating and instant-boiling water systems. He was born in Sydney and spent most of his career developing a private industrial group centred on household and commercial water products.

Business career

Crouch acquired Zip Heaters in 1962 and over subsequent decades transformed it into Zip Industries, overseeing product development, manufacturing and the company's commercial direction. He served as Executive Chairman of Zip Industries until December 2013. After stepping down from the executive role he continued to direct investments and corporate affairs as Chairman of Midgeon Holdings Pty Ltd, the private company through which he managed business interests.

Products and significance

Under Crouch's leadership, Zip Industries became associated with rapid-heating water appliances, including instant boiling-water taps and under-sink heaters used in both domestic kitchens and commercial settings. The company emphasised compact designs suited to modern kitchens and workplaces and built a manufacturing capability focused on reliability and ease of installation. These products exemplify a broader trend in postwar manufacturing toward convenience appliances that save time and space.
