Mazhar Shukri Krasniqi

Early life and migration

Krasniqi was born in Pristina, then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Pristina is today the capital of Kosovo. He later emigrated to New Zealand, where he became active in civic life and faith-based organising. His background connected him to broader currents of 20th-century migration from the Balkans and helped shape his perspective on minority community needs in a new country.

Community leadership and activities

In New Zealand Krasniqi focussed on institution building and representation. He worked with local Islamic centres to coordinate religious services, education and outreach. Under his leadership FIANZ sought to standardise practices among Muslim organisations and to represent Muslims in public discussions on religious rights, cultural needs and social integration.

Recognition and roles

His public service was formally recognised when he was awarded the Queen's Service Medal (QSM) in December 2002 for community service. Among his notable roles and contributions were:

• First president of FIANZ (1979–1981), providing national leadership during the organisation's formative years.
• Advocacy for greater understanding between Muslim communities and wider New Zealand society.
• Support for community institutions that offered religious, educational and social services.

Legacy and significance

Mazhar Krasniqi is remembered as an early and influential organiser for Muslims in New Zealand. His tenure helped establish structures that later generations built upon, and his QSM acknowledged a lifetime of voluntary service. He died on 8 August 2019 at the age of 87, leaving a legacy in communal organisation and public representation that remains part of New Zealand's religious history.
