Trade and craft

A mason in the construction trades prepares, cuts and lays masonry units and binds them with mortar or other adhesives. Traditional stonemasons work with quarried stone for load-bearing walls, facades, monuments and sculptural elements. Brickmasons (bricklayers) specialize in fired-clay or concrete blocks used in walls and paving. Modern masons must master tools, mixing and curing of mortars, structural detailing and safety standards. Apprenticeship and vocational training are common routes into the occupation.

"Mason" is a surname and an increasingly popular given name in English-speaking countries, deriving from the occupational term. In everyday language the word also appears in compound names: a mason jar is a screw-top glass jar long used for preserving food; a mason bee is a solitary bee (often of the genus Osmia) that nests in cavities and uses mud or other materials to partition brood cells. In some contexts, "Mason" is used informally to mean a member of Freemasonry, a fraternal organization whose rituals and symbolism draw on the imagery of operative masons.

It is useful to distinguish between the working mason (the trade), the Freemason (a member of a fraternal order), and other uses that honor the name or describe similar behaviors (e.g., mason bees).
