Overview

Arrissoules is a small rural settlement in the French-speaking part of western Switzerland. Historically administered within the district of Yverdon in the canton of Vaud, it retains the character of a quiet village surrounded by farmland and mixed woodland. Local life has traditionally centred on agriculture and small-scale local services rather than industry or urban development.

Geography and characteristics

The village lies in a gently rolling landscape typical of northern Vaud, with easy road links to nearby towns. Buildings are a mix of vernacular farmhouses and more recent houses. Public infrastructure is limited on a village scale, and residents commonly rely on neighbouring municipalities for schools, shops and administrative services.

Administrative history

Until the early 21st century Arrissoules functioned as an independent municipality. On 1 January 2005 the former municipality of Arrissoules was merged into the neighbouring municipality of Rovray, which kept the name Rovray. This kind of municipal consolidation has been relatively common in Switzerland, undertaken to streamline local administration and share services among small communities.

Transport and the Arrissoules Tunnel

One of the village's most widely known nearby features is the Arrissoules Tunnel of the A1 motorway. The A1 is a major east–west route across northern Switzerland, and the tunnel helps maintain faster, safer traffic flow in this section. While the motorway brings improved accessibility, the tunnel and road infrastructure also underline the contrast between the high-capacity transport corridor and the surrounding rural landscape.

Local importance and visiting

Although not a tourist centre, Arrissoules offers a glimpse of rural life in Vaud: quiet lanes, agricultural plots and traditional architecture. Visitors interested in regional geography or in following local transport developments sometimes note the proximity of the A1 and its tunnel as points of interest. For most practical needs, residents and visitors use nearby towns in the former Yverdon district for services and amenities.
