Overview

Flag of Jurmala.svg Jūrmala is a coastal city and resort area in Latvia, situated along the Gulf of Riga. Officially granted town rights in 1959, it developed as a seaside destination with a mix of holiday facilities, sanatoriums and residential neighbourhoods. Its close proximity to the capital makes it one of the country’s most frequented summer retreats.

Landscape and character

The city stretches along a long sandy shoreline backed by belts of pine forest. The combination of fine sand, sea breezes and wooded promenades has shaped Jūrmala’s reputation as a place for rest and health-oriented recreation. Public beaches, wooden promenades and small dunes are typical elements of the local landscape.

Architecture and neighbourhoods

Jūrmala is known for its distinctive wooden villas, many dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often featuring carved details and verandas. Several districts retain different characters and attractions. Notable areas include:

  • Majori – a central hub with hotels, shops and a main concert venue;
  • Dzintari – known for its concert hall and park;
  • Bulduri and others – quieter residential and spa zones.

History and development

Originally a collection of fishing villages and seasonal bathing places, the locality grew into a spa and resort area in the 19th century as visitors from Riga and abroad sought sea air and therapeutic stays. Over time sanatoriums, guesthouses and leisure facilities multiplied. The municipal consolidation in the mid-20th century formalised Jūrmala as a single town while preserving its resort identity.
