Background and family

Jin Youzhi was born at the Prince Chun Mansion in the Shichahai area of Beijing, a residence associated with his father's princely household. As a younger son of Zaifeng he lived within the extended imperial family at a time when the Qing dynasty had already been replaced by the republic. Members of the Aisin Gioro line often adopted Chinese surnames after 1912; the element "Aisin," meaning "gold" in Manchu, was sometimes rendered as the Chinese surname "Jin."

Life across eras

Although never a reigning figure, Jin Youzhi's lifespan encompassed the last years of imperial China, the Republican era, the Japanese occupation, the civil war, and the establishment and consolidation of the People's Republic of China. His personal history is therefore often cited as an example of how former imperial families adjusted to social and political change in the 20th century.

In later decades Jin Youzhi was recognized primarily as a surviving member of the Qing imperial lineage.
