Overview
Abington Township is a suburban municipality in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States, lying along the northern boundary of the City of Philadelphia. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area and had a population of approximately 55,310 at the 2010 census. The township combines residential neighborhoods, small commercial centers and larger retail nodes that serve the surrounding region.
Government and services
Abington is organized as a township of the first class, governed by an elected board of commissioners. The municipal government oversees local services including police, fire protection, public works, zoning and parks and recreation. Local administration works with county and state agencies on regional planning and transportation.
Neighborhoods and community life
The township contains a number of distinct communities and mailing addresses that often retain their own local identities. Among the better known are:
- Willow Grove — a commercial and retail hub with a large mall on the site of a former amusement park.
- Glenside — noted for its commuter rail station and mixed residential streets.
- Roslyn, Rydal and Ardsley — primarily residential neighborhoods with local parks and schools.
- Jenkintown — a small borough surrounded by the township; it is politically separate but closely linked by commerce and transit.
History and development
Originally settled during the colonial era, the area developed more rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries as rail and trolley connections to Philadelphia encouraged suburban growth. Industrial and commercial activity concentrated near transportation hubs while tree-lined residential blocks expanded outward. Historic buildings and older neighborhoods reflect the township’s gradual evolution from rural land to a mature suburb.
Transportation and economy
Abington is served by regional rail and bus routes that connect residents to Philadelphia and other suburbs, as well as by arterial roads that support local commerce. The Willow Grove commercial district functions as an employment and shopping center for northern suburbs. Small businesses, service industries and school district employment make up a large share of the local economy.
Education, parks and notable facts
The township is served by the Abington School District, which operates elementary schools, middle schools and Abington Senior High. Recreational facilities include neighborhood parks, athletic fields, and organized community programs. Abington’s close proximity to a major city, combined with established neighborhoods and transit links, makes it a long-standing suburban community within the greater Philadelphia region.
