AMC Theatres (commonly called AMC) is a multinational movie theater chain based in Leawood, Kansas. Founded in 1920, the company has grown into one of the largest operators of commercial cinemas in North America.
Market position
AMC commands the largest share of the American theatrical market, ranking ahead of rivals such as Cineworld and Cinemark by number of locations and screens.
Expansion by acquisition
Starting in 2016, AMC expanded rapidly through a series of major acquisitions. Those deals—among them the purchases of the Odeon and UCI cinema groups and Carmike Cinemas—substantially increased its global footprint and contributed to its status as the world’s biggest movie-theater chain by screens and sites, including within the United States.
Operations and scale
Today AMC operates hundreds of sites across multiple regions. Its European holdings number more than 240 theaters with roughly 2,200 screens, while in the United States the company operates over 660 venues totaling about 8,200 screens.
