At the 2014 census Divo had 179,455 inhabitants, making it the country's tenth-largest city by population. The town functions as a regional hub for administration, trade and services in the surrounding rural area. For basic travel and logistics it is served by Divo Airport.
Location and characteristics
Divo lies in the southern forest and agricultural zone of Ivory Coast, an area notable for cash-crop cultivation. The city combines an urban centre with surrounding markets and agricultural villages. Typical facilities include local government offices, regional health and education institutions, transport interchanges and commercial markets that serve both town residents and producers from the countryside.
Economy and role
The economy around Divo is largely agricultural, with cocoa and coffee among the principal cash crops cultivated in the region, alongside plantain, rubber and food crops for local consumption. As a regional town, Divo acts as a collection and trading point where produce is aggregated for shipment to processing centres and export ports. Small-scale commerce, services and public-sector employment are important sources of urban income.
Key local features include:
- Administrative functions: seat of the department and region.
- Transport links: regional roads and an airport providing access for passengers and light cargo.
- Market role: weekly and daily markets for agricultural goods and consumer items.
- Service provision: hospitals, schools and government services that serve a wider rural catchment.
History and development
Divo developed over the 20th century as colonial and post-colonial administration extended into southern Ivory Coast, and it grew further with the expansion of commercial agriculture. Migration from neighbouring areas to work on plantations and to trade has contributed to its population growth and ethnic diversity. Modern challenges for the city include managing urban expansion, improving infrastructure and ensuring services keep pace with population needs.
Notable facts and links
Aside from its administrative status and market importance, Divo is notable for being one of the larger regional cities in Ivory Coast and for its airport, which connects the town to other parts of the country.
