Allen Edward Ertel (November 7, 1936 – November 19, 2015) was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who represented a district in Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 3, 1977 to January 3, 1983. Born and raised in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Ertel became known for his regional focus and for service during a period of shifting political dynamics in the state.
Early life and background
Ertel's formative years were spent in Williamsport, where he completed his education and began a professional life that led into public service. Before his election to Congress he was active in his community and in local political circles. Details of his early career reflect the common mid-20th-century path of civic involvement that preceded many congressional careers, including legal and civic work at the county and state level.
Congressional career (1977–1983)
Ertel served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives during a time when Pennsylvania districts experienced economic and political change. In Washington he participated in the legislative process on matters relevant to his constituents, focusing on issues typical for representatives from the region, such as economic development, federal funding for local projects, and policies that affected manufacturing and agriculture. His tenure coincided with debates over federal budget priorities and responses to economic challenges of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Election defeat and later life
In the 1982 election Ertel was unseated by Republican George Gekas in what contemporary accounts described as an upset. After leaving Congress he returned to his home region and remained involved in public affairs. He died on November 19, 2015, in Williamsport from a heart attack at the age of 79.
