Overview
Dan McLaughlin (born March 18, 1974) is an American sportscaster known for play-by-play announcing across professional and collegiate sports. His work has been heard and seen on regional and national platforms, where he has covered Major League Baseball, college basketball, college football, the National Hockey League and occasional National Football League games.
Broadcasting career and assignments
McLaughlin has been a regular voice for the St. Louis Cardinals and for the Missouri Tigers college basketball program. In addition to those primary roles, he has called college basketball for ESPNU and Fox Sports Net and has handled regional college football broadcasts for ESPN. Earlier in his career he served as a play-by-play announcer for the St. Louis Blues, and he worked as a regional NFL play-by-play announcer for Fox during the 2006 season, a period that included assignments involving the St. Louis Rams. He has also filled in on occasional Cardinals telecasts produced for Fox.
Sports covered and contexts
McLaughlin's assignments span multiple sports and production settings. In Major League Baseball broadcasts, the play-by-play role focuses on describing live action, guiding viewers through innings and providing continuity between innings. In college basketball and football, announcers often balance fast-paced play description with statistics, player background and context about team strategies. Regional NFL work typically pairs a local market focus with national production standards.
Role and responsibilities
As a play-by-play announcer, McLaughlin's principal responsibilities are to narrate the action in real time, set the rhythm of the broadcast, and collaborate with color commentators, analysts and producers to present a coherent telecast. Play-by-play announcers also prepare by studying rosters, recent performance, and relevant storylines, and they adapt language and pacing to television and radio formats.
Importance and distinctions
Working across regional and national outlets requires versatility; regional broadcasts emphasize local rivalry, player connections and fan expectations, while national assignments demand broader context for diverse audiences. McLaughlin's résumé reflects this mix: consistent regional presence with the Cardinals and Missouri athletics, plus periodic national appearances for ESPN and Fox affiliates.
