Overview
The Alexander ALX400 is a two-axle, low-floor double-decker bus body introduced in 1997 and built until 2006. Designed during a transition to low-floor public transport, it combined modern accessibility with a conventional double-deck layout. The ALX400 was produced by Walter Alexander and continued under the TransBus International and Alexander Dennis names following corporate reorganisations.
Design and key characteristics
The ALX400 body provided a step-free lower-deck entrance and a raised but accessible upper deck reached by an internal staircase. It was offered in multiple lengths and interior layouts to suit city, suburban and tourist duties. Common features included a wide front windscreen for driver visibility, large side windows for passenger sightlines, and options for one or two doors.
- Low-floor lower deck for improved accessibility
- Two-axle double-decker configuration
- Available in a range of lengths and door arrangements
- Built to be mounted on different chassis types
Chassis and variants
The ALX400 body was compatible with several popular chassis of the era, most notably the Dennis Trident 2, the Volvo B7TL and the DAF DB250. Operators chose combinations of body and chassis to balance capacity, maneuverability and service requirements. Some ALX400s were later converted to open-top layouts for sightseeing work, while others underwent mid-life refurbishments.
History and operators
Introduced as transport authorities and private operators sought low-floor vehicles, the ALX400 became a common sight in the United Kingdom and was exported to other markets. Large municipal and commercial fleets used it on busy urban routes and longer suburban corridors. Its adaptability made it suitable for both high-capacity commuter services and for conversion to tourist use.
Legacy and distinctions
Production of the ALX400 ended in 2006 as manufacturers introduced newer models; it was effectively succeeded by later designs from Alexander Dennis that incorporated updated styling and emissions technology. The ALX400 is remembered for helping accelerate the shift to accessible low-floor double-deck buses and for its widespread adoption across diverse operating environments.
