Aleksandr Nikolaevich Kurlovich (Russian: Александр Николаевич Курлович, also spelled Alexandre Kurlovich; 28 July 1961 – 6 April 2018) was a noted Belarusian heavyweight weightlifter who competed internationally for the Soviet Union and later Belarus.

Early life and training

Kurlovich was born in the city of Grodno. He developed his strength and technique while training with the Armed Forces sports organisation based in Grodno, which produced many elite lifters during his era.

Career and recognition

During his competitive years Kurlovich established a reputation as one of the top super-heavyweight lifters. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame in 2006.

Controversy

In 1984, while entering Canada, authorities discovered anabolic steroids in his possession with an estimated value of $10,000; contemporary reports indicated the substances were intended for sale to other weightlifters.

Death

Kurlovich died on 6 April 2018 at the age of 56.
