Overview
Aldyr Garcia Schlee (22 November 1934 – 15 November 2018) was a multifaceted Brazilian intellectual: a writer, journalist, translator, illustrator and university teacher. Born in Jaguarão on Brazil's southern border, he became known both for his literary output—especially short fiction and essays—and for a single design that entered popular culture worldwide.
Literary career and languages
Schlee published short stories, reviews and translations, working across Portuguese and Spanish. Some of his narratives first reached readers in nearby Uruguay before being incorporated into anthologies in Brazil and elsewhere. His writing often reflected the cultural exchange of the Rio Grande do Sul–Uruguay border region, combining local color with broader literary concerns. In addition to fiction, he produced critical texts and academic work and contributed illustrations for various publications.
The Camisa Canarinho
In 1953 Schlee is credited with designing the now-iconic yellow jersey known as the "Camisa Canarinho" for the Brazil national football team. The bright yellow shirt, now closely associated with Brazil's football identity, replaced the earlier kit and has been worn by generations of players. The design is frequently cited as an example of how a single visual idea can acquire strong cultural meaning.
Legacy and influence
Schlee's legacy spans literature, visual arts and popular culture. As a translator and cultural mediator he helped bring works across linguistic borders; as an educator he influenced students and readers interested in regional literature and Latin American letters. The dual recognition of his written work and the enduring popularity of the Brazil jersey make him a distinctive figure in twentieth-century Brazilian culture.
Personal life and passing
Born in 1934, Schlee remained connected to the southern Brazilian cultural milieu throughout his life. He died on 15 November 2018 in Lisbon, at the age of 83. His work continues to be cited in studies of border literature, translation and sports iconography.
