Overview
Clement is a township in Dickey County, in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of North Dakota. According to the 2010 U.S. census the township recorded a population of 109. As an administrative township it is one of several rural civil subdivisions that make up the county and recent decades have seen the same demographic pressures that affect many Great Plains communities.
Geography and climate
Located on the central North American plains, Clement sits within a landscape dominated by agricultural fields, prairie remnants and a generally flat to gently rolling topography. The region has a continental climate: cold, snowy winters and warm summers with seasonal precipitation concentrated in late spring and summer, a pattern that shapes planting and harvest cycles.
Government and local services
Township government in North Dakota typically handles local road maintenance, minor zoning matters and other services delegated by the county. Clement functions under this system, cooperating with county agencies for law enforcement, public health, and larger infrastructure. Residents rely on nearby towns for many municipal services, commercial needs and specialized healthcare.
Economy and land use
The economy of Clement is largely rural and agricultural in character. Farms and ranches in and around the township tend to produce commodity crops and support livestock operations typical of the region. Small-scale local businesses, farm-related services and seasonal employment supplement primary agricultural income. Many residents also commute to nearby towns for work, education and retail.
History and development
Like many townships across North Dakota, Clement’s settlement history reflects broader patterns of late 19th- and early 20th-century migration to the Plains: homesteading, railroad expansion and agricultural development. Over time farm consolidation and changes in transportation and markets have altered settlement patterns, contributing to population decline or stagnation in some rural areas.
Community life and significance
Community institutions in and around small townships often include churches, volunteer organizations and schools that may be consolidated at the county level. These institutions form the social core and preserve local traditions even as populations change. As part of Dickey County, Clement contributes to the county’s agricultural output, rural character and historical landscape, and exemplifies the challenges and resilience of small Great Plains communities.
