Overview
Trần Thiện Khiêm (15 December 1925 – 24 June 2021) was a Vietnamese military officer and politician who played a prominent role in the Republic of Vietnam (commonly called South Vietnam) during the period of the Vietnam War. Rising through the ranks of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, he became known for his involvement in internal power struggles and later for serving as Prime Minister from 1969 until the end of the republic in 1975. He spent his later years in the United States and died in San Jose, California.
Military career and early political activity
Initially a career officer, Khiêm served in the armed forces of the South and was recognized within military circles for his command experience. He was involved in the volatile politics of the 1960s, a decade that saw multiple coup d'état attempts and changes of government. In November 1960 he supported the regime of President Ngô Đình Diệm in suppressing an attempted coup and received advancement as a result.
Role in 1963 events and later coups
As political tensions intensified, Khiêm was among the officers who took part in the 1963 coup that overthrew President Ngô Đình Diệm. That overthrow marked a turning point in South Vietnamese politics and led to a period of rapid turnover in government and continuing military influence over civilian affairs. Throughout the 1960s he remained an influential figure in both military and political networks.
Prime ministership and exile
In 1969 Khiêm became Prime Minister of South Vietnam, a position he held until the fall of the republic in 1975. His term coincided with the presidency of Nguyễn Văn Thiệu and with some of the most intense years of the war. After the capture of Saigon and the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule, Khiêm left the country and settled in the United States, where he lived for decades as part of the Vietnamese expatriate community.
